The Lanesboro Library will be renovated the first two weeks of January. They are looking for people to help with painting, carrying books, moving shelves, etc... Please stop by the library to sign up!

It's heeeeere! The Scholastic Book Fair books have arrived! Please join us this week for the book fair. The money raised goes toward our library!

Scholastic Book Fair

Membership Drive Time

The Friends of the Lanesboro Library (FOLL) is having our annual membership drive.

We want to express our appreciation for your generosity in support of the Friends of the Lanesboro Library in the past. Your personal tax deductible gift – a suggested $25 – goes a long way to insure the continued success of our very valuable Lanesboro library. THANK YOU! Supporting our library is an important way of working together to build a stronger community.

With our combined efforts and funds, we are working together to bring more new and updated services and resources to our Lanesboro community. Because of your ongoing help in the past year, we have been able to provide a year-round book sale in addition to the Scholastic Book Sale and Farmers’ Market book sales on Saturdays. We worked to bring a live eagle to the Stand-Still Parade, started a FOLL website, coordinated the school Summer Reading Program skit, sponsored the Race discussion, and obtained a popcorn machine for the library. We’ve been able to purchase a stand for the popcorn machine, chairs for the library entry area, a new banner for the library, a frame board for selling books, and a new camera for the library! Without your support, we could not have accomplished any of these things. Again, a big THANK YOU.

Todd Boss will be at the Lanesboro Public Library, 202 Parkway Ave. S., on April 14 @ 7:00 p.m. Boss's debut poetry collection, Yellowrocket, enjoyed widespread critical and popular acclaim. Todd's poems have been syndicated on NPR and in Ted Kooser's American Life in Poetry column. To celebrateNational Poetry Month and the release of the 2011 Poetic Strokes Anthology, SELCO has organized a “Poets at the Library” tour. This project was funded in part or in whole with money from Minnesota’s Arts & Cultural Heritage Fund.

We recently participated in two events! First we had a table full of kids' books outside the library one beautiful Saturday morning for the Children's Festival. Thanks to everyone who stopped by and purchased books, and of course we are also thankful to the people who donate boxes of good, interesting books!

There was also a Community International Night in Sylvan Park on Tuesday, July 20, sponsored by the Commonweal and Lanesboro community. It was centered around Sounds of Hope, the six-week, overnight performing arts summer camp in Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA for kids aged 10 and older from around the world (www.soundsofhope.org). There were games and a teaser concert put on by Sounds of Hope. The Friends of the Library organized a friendship bracelet booth which went over tremendously with the kids!

RACE exhibit

There is an exhibit on Race at the Rochester Library. There will be a discussion about race, facilitated by Renee Bergstrom and Bethany Krom, at the Lanesboro Library on Tuesday, August 31 at 6pm. This is a family event and light refreshments will be available. This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Lanesboro Library and Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

The Lanesboro Library offers several choices - digital CDs, cassette tapes, and Playaways. Check them out!

Norstad's Birthday Party

Thank you so much to everyone who came out to the Lanesboro Library for Norstad's sixth birthday! It was a huge success with cake, juice, books, and a video. Norstad had a super time.

Did you know that the Friends of the Lanesboro Library is also turning six? In six short years, we have raised over $17,000 for the library. This money has been used to purchase books, DVDs, Playaways, and so much more.

Salutations Friends

Looking forward to seeing you all at Norstad's B-day party at the Library from 6-8 pm tomorrow. Please plan to attend at least by 5:30 to help set up for the event. I will be getting the cake and juice boxes and bring the other decorations by then. Bob Culbertson donated about 20 beverages for use to also use at the event. (Bill- please send him a thank you for the beverages!- thank you!)

If you have a camera to take some photo's to mark the event that would be great. ( please forward teh photo's to Barb and Eliza to edit the choices available.

Our Barb (ie-rah) K is going to make another appearance again this weekend at the St Main... so if you missed her last week this is your last chance!

Thank you Bill for going through the magazines on Friday 3/12 to recycle older than 2yr old magazines

Mandy our great secretary will soon be sending out the minuets from the last meeting so be on the look out!

I believe that Jerome said that he could be at the Standstill parade and has assistance from Karen N and her daughter Sabrina (our little queen of everything)! we will still needs some more help at this event.

Our B- day for Norstad party passed at the Library board level and will happen on TUESDAY the 13th and not Thursday the 15th.

We received koodos not cooties for our work in the Library entrance....our team Rocks the House again.....go team go!!!

Kelly Jean has been working on the tri-fold and will be submitting a revisable copy soon.

We still need to help Blake with an information board about the book sale that will be posted by the new shelves to inform people about the book sale process! ....can anyone help on this ?

Lobby follow up

Brian,

Thank you for all the work the Friends of the Library have done on the Library lobby -- the shelves look great! And the placement of the bulletin board nearer the entrance makes a lot of sense. We appreciate the energy and the Friends' prompt attention to carrying out the plan you presented to the board. FYI, Jill is also going to talk to the city about replacing the valance tube lights that are burned out.

Still to tweak: I see at least three details we still need to work out regarding the lobby. What to do about (1) coat hooks that had to be taken down, (2) the display/information table and (3) the memorial bench.

For (1), I've asked Jill to track -- from now until the next board meeting -- the number of people who need to use coat hooks but temporarily cannot. That will give us some idea of demand before deciding how to proceed.

For the table (2) we will either need to keep it in front of the window as a display space and general information rack (e.g., for tax info, Chamber brochures, etc) or remove it and find other ways to provide these conveniences. I want to discuss this with Jill and the board at our March meeting.

As for the bench (3) let's all be thinking of a suitable place for it that won't interfere with traffic patterns or other furniture.

Communication: Meanwhile, as you proceed with other changes, please keep Jill well-infomred of what you are planning at any given time. The board approved all your ideas in principle, but there may be some details that call for modification or brainstorming a slightly different solution. We love the idea of making the library a more inviting space, but we want to make sure the specifics are thought through fully when the rubber has to meet the road. To extend that metaphor, Jill is in the vehicle's driver seat daily, and may see potential bumps (and ways to avoid them) that no one else does. So please work with her to keep communication open.

At the next board meeting, we'll also discuss ways we as a board can facilitate this communication. Thanks.

The meeting was called to order by Eliza
The minutes from the past meeting were reviewed, Blake made a motion to approve the minutes, all approved

The treasurer’s report was read and Tracey made a motion to approve, Blake 2nd the motion.

Old business, Scholastic book fair gave us a profit of $522.65 to purchase new materials.
We discussed the need for more shelving in the entryway. We would all like to see more shelving for continual sales of the used books from the library and patron donations.

Discussion about membership, why is the membership board we made to draw in more members not hanging in the lobby? We were told there will be discussion at the Library Board meeting about this.
Tracey suggested putting a reminder poster up in the lobby to remind patrons that membership is due in Jan. and runs for 1 year.
Brian and Mimi had a idea about fundraising from the Lions, Fireman, etc…., they said we need to be present at the meetings to ask for money and to have a set item to spend it on in order to increase our odds of getting donations.

There was discussion about the liaison between the library board and the FOLL board; we would like that person to speak at our meetings so we know what is going on with the library board. We haven’t asked the liaison to speak in the past.

Blake stated that he found out about the Friends by attending a Earth Day event where we were selling books and looking for members.
Blake asked the question” Are we doing anything for the community?”
Our membership numbers are so low that we discussed disbanding the Friends.
Blake will go to the next Library Board meeting to discuss if they want/need us.

We discussed ways to get rid of some of the tote bags we purchased. Perhaps, Lanesboro Local could sell some. We could give a free bag with a 2 yr membership.

Eliza informed us that Bill Swanson and Jerome Yorke would serve on our board. Brian Luna also shows great interest in serving on the Board.
We did not have enough board members present to vote so we will have another meeting in Feb to elect new board members and officers because Tracey, Eliza, Karen and Glenn have fulfilled their 3 year term.
